Your trusted Woodbury braces expert
At Henseler & Kocian Orthodontics, we create beautiful smiles for patients of all ages each day in our Woodbury office. Whether you're seeking a brilliant, straight smile for yourself or a loved one, our team of orthodontic experts can help. We offer a wide variety of orthodontic treatment options, including both traditional metal braces and clear, ceramic braces, all of which are highly effective in achieving optimal tooth and jaw alignment.
Types of braces
No matter which treatment option you choose, we will be able to create beautiful, straight smiles that you can feel confident in. Traditional metal braces, for instance, can sometimes work faster when it comes to closing gaps in your teeth and aligning them than other treatments might, leading to shorter overall treatment times. Additionally, they are often more cost-effective compared to other options. With advancements in technology, today's metal braces are now more durable, affordable, and comfortable than ever before, making them a top choice for orthodontic treatment.
Metal Braces
Year after year, traditional metal braces remain the most commonly used type of orthodontic treatment. They consist of high-grade stainless steel and work by straightening your teeth using metal brackets and archwires. Today's metal braces are more comfortable and fun, and you may even be able to choose colored elastics to add a bit of personality during your orthodontic treatment. Clear or tooth-colored elastics are also available for those who want a more subtle look.
Ceramic Braces
Our clear, ceramic braces work in the same way as traditional metal braces, with the only difference being that their brackets are made with a clear ceramic material instead. They are an excellent option for achieving a brilliant, straight smile and are often more popular among older teen and adult patients due to the discretion they offer. However, the brackets on clear braces may be larger and easier to break than metal brackets, so it is important to take extra care when taking care of your teeth during your treatment.
Getting to know the process
At Henseler & Kocian Orthodontics, we understand that every patient's orthodontic needs are unique. That's why before we even begin the process of attaching your braces, we take the time to get to know you and your needs. Our friendly team will collect digital x-rays, photos and a model of your mouth to create a personalized treatment plan for you. This plan will determine the specific movements each tooth needs to make to achieve its best positioning and will determine how your brackets need to be placed.
Once your personalized treatment plan has been created, we'll attach the brackets to your teeth and insert a wire to provide pressure on all of the teeth that need to be moved. The wire is gradually bent and adjusted to encourage specific and precise tooth movements over time. As the teeth move, minor changes occur in the bone surrounding the roots of the teeth. Cells called osteoblasts and osteoclasts form around the roots of your teeth, removing bone on one side and reforming it on the other side.
To ensure your teeth remain in their new and improved positions, constant pressure is required on the teeth. Unfortunately, even after your braces are removed, your teeth will have a tendency to drift back towards their old positions. That's why we recommend using a retainer to help prevent this natural drifting and to keep your teeth in their new positions.
